Curtis Phipps

Mr. Curtis Milton Phipps, age 86, passed from life into life everlasting on Wednesday, November 27, 2019 at 6:45 a.m.  Curtis joins his beloved wife, Roberta “Bobbie” Phipps and infant daughter, Pamela Ann in heaven, along with his parents, Ernest and Helene Phipps; his sister, Mary Elizabeth “Mary Beth” Waldron; sister, Grace Roseanne Phipps; sister, Darlene Faye Bliss and husband Donald; brother, Ernest Laverne Phipps and wife Betty; and mother-in-law Flossie Woods.  He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Glenn and Joan Phipps, and his brother-in-law, Eldon “Tex” Waldron. His living children include Denise and her husband Jerry Solomon, Karen and her husband Malcolm Beck, Yvonne and her husband Ronald LeVan, Jonathan and his wife Vicki (Ward) Phipps.  He is also survived by his grandchildren: Christopher Shelton, Joseph Shelton, Stephine Taylor and her fiancée David Sandlin, Jesse Solomon, Jonathan David (JD) Phipps, Richard LeVan and his wife Wendy, Cindy LeVan-Sauceda and her fiancée Jack Apthorp. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren: Riley Shelton, Gabriel Taylor, Levi Taylor, Joshua Sandlin, Jayla Sandlin, Isaiah Sandlin; Heather Sauceda, Andrew LeVan and his wife Sarah, Ashley LeVan; and his many much-loved nephews and nieces.

Curtis’s charismatic personality, love for God, and humor touched all who knew him, including those who worked alongside him until his retirement from Hatteras Yachts in High Point, North Carolina.  His sense of duty to friends and family was partially attributable to his time spent in the US Marine Corps during wartime Korea, where he served as a mortar gunner and received several accolades, including the Purple Heart.

Curtis returned from Korea in 1954 and began his primary role as a loving husband and father, often juggling two jobs to support his family.  His Semper Fi (always faithful) heart led him to serve his Lord and Savior, first as a Sunday school teacher at Urban Street Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, and later in the Bus Ministry at Woodland Baptist Church.  In recent years he enjoyed fellowship at New Vision Baptist Worship Center in Clemmons, North Carolina, where he served as a deacon.

A graveside service honoring Curtis’s life and legacy will be held at 1pm on Wednesday, December 4, 2019 at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, 3250 High Point Road, Winston-Salem, 27107.  Friends are encouraged to attend alongside family. Pastor Tracy Webb of New Vision Baptist Worship Center will be officiating.

Hayworth-Miller is assisting the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
