Gloria Long

Gloria Sizemore Long, 85, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 31, 2019 at Forsyth Medical Center. This would have been her late husband's 94th birthday. They were married in 1956, after meeting on a blind date, and enjoyed their many happy years together until her husband passed in 2008. Mrs. Long was born April 25, 1933 in Forsyth County. Following graduation from Hanes High School in 1951, she attended N.C. Baptist Hospital School of Nursing where she completed her R.N. degree in 1954. Her extensive career spanned 20 years and included such positions as Head Nurse (surgical), Office Nurse (pediatrics), E.R., and OB/GYN. In addition, she worked as a Visiting Home Nurse, as well as, an Industrial Nurse for Western Electric Co., where her husband was also employed. Her service to the community continued into the 1980’s with Welcome Wagon International. She completed her career by working in customer service at Belk Department Store. Mrs. Long was a member of Bethabara Moravian Church for 40 plus years, serving as a volunteer, and participating in the annual Fall Festival with her beautiful, handmade crafts. Through her lifetime, no matter what obstacles she encountered, her strong faith in God never wavered and was an inspiration to others. Her devotion to her family was evident to anyone who knew her. Her two granddaughters were the lights of her life and the close bonds between them will forever be cherished. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Russell Long; parents, Coy Monroe Sizemore and Margaret Mae Smitherman Sizemore; son-in-law, Bruce Drake; and brothers-in-law Raymond McMillan, and Clarence “Butch” Allen; as well as her beloved canine companion, “Gidget.” Surviving are her daughter, Linda Long Taylor Drake; granddaughters, Shannon Melissa Rawe (Travis), and Megan Elizabeth Taylor; sisters, Bernice Allen and Barbara McMillan; brother-in-law Alton Long (Emily), as well as, several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, April 4, 2019 at Bethabara Moravian Church with Rev. Jeff Jones officiating. Interment will follow in Bethabara Moravian Graveyard. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethabara Moravian Church, 2100 Bethabara Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106; or Pruitt Health Hospice, 924 Main Street, Ste. 100, Wilkesboro, NC 28659.
