Harold Calloway

Harold Lee Calloway, our beloved daddy and granddaddy, passed away into the loving arms of our Savior on Saturday morning, February 2, 2019.  Harold, born on October 26, 1924 to Roger and Flora Calloway, was the very embodiment of hard work, service, and pure personality.  Harold served in the US Army in Germany during World War II.  He then went on to work for the US Postal Service as well as manage the family farm.  He was especially fond of the many lifelong friends he made along his mail route.  To say that Harold was a worker would be an understatement.  He cultivated a garden each year that would yield vegetables to feed an entire village, built several houses in our community as well as across the East Coast on mission trips, and spent countless hours in his shop crafting wooden furniture to fill all of our homes.   Harold loved being around people whether it was sitting around teasing friends at the corner store or gathering to enjoy bluegrass music.  He was a bigger-than-life character and will be sorely missed.  Left to cherish his memory are his children, Lydia (Jim) Blume, Deborah (Tim) Tuttle, Mike (Gina) Calloway, and Joy (Randy) Rutledge; grandchildren, Jessica (Patrick) Stump, Clay (Tommi)Tuttle, Patrick (Jamie) Blume, Casey (Christy) Tuttle, Michela (Jon) Stevens,  Macy Rutledge, and Ryan Calloway (Adrianna Sisk); great-grandchildren, Addison, Leighton, Jaden, Ticey, Lyla, Emery, Katie, Kohl, Mason, Jasper, Silas and Maggie; sisters, Faye Hudgins, Carolyn Boles; and special sisters-in-law, Joan Calloway and Virginia Hooker; as well as many other family members and friends.  He was greeted in heaven by his precious wife of 63 years, Nancy, as well as his siblings, Rogene Love, Foy Calloway, Frank Calloway, Douglas Calloway, and Gray Calloway.  We will celebrate the life of Harold at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, February 7, 2019 at Trinity United Methodist Church in King. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the committal service in the church multi-purpose room. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Harold may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church Ballfield Fund/Youth (725 West Dalton Road, King, NC 27021) of which he was a faithful member his entire life, King Outreach Ministries (413 Kingsway Dr., King, NC 27021) where he spent many hours volunteering, or Joan & Howard Woltz Hospice Home (945 Zephyr Road, Dobson, NC 27017) who provided peaceful comfort to him in this final journey home. “A special thank you to the staff of Ridgecrest Assisted Living in Mount Airy for the love and care they showed Daddy during his stay there.”
