Horace Lee "Matt" Matthews

Horace Lee “Matt” Matthews, 88, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 17, 2020. He was born August 14, 1931 in Perry, Ga. His parents were Henry Jackson Matthews and Mattie Lee Boswell Matthews.

He is predeceased by his father and mother, son, Horace Edward Matthews, and brother, James Henry Matthews (Sharon). He is survived by his wife of almost 44 years, Katherine Davis Matthews; step-daughter, Glenda Fesperman; sister, Shirley Smith (Smitty), step-son, Roy A. Hunt (Miriam), granddaughters, Jennifer L. Johnson (Jeffrey) and Jessica Davis Hunt McCready (Charlie); and great-grandchildren, Bryson and Billie Johnson; sister-in-law, Sharon Davis Fulks; and other nieces and nephews.

“Matt” grew up in Perry, Ga. and attended Perry High School, where he ran track, played basketball and baseball and was Senior Class Secretary. He entered the US Air Force and served from 1954-1957 and was honorably discharged with a rank of 1st Lt. He was then a commercial airline pilot for a short period and then became an Air Traffic Controller from 1958-1984 at The Miami Center as a Chief Air Traffic Controller. He married the love of his life, Kathy, in November 1977 in Miami, Florida. They moved to Winston-Salem, NC in 1984 and stayed until November 2019 when they moved to Lexington, SC. His hobbies included electronics, self-taught woodworking, stained glass, crossword and jigsaw puzzles, model airplanes, computer airplane simulators, yard work and bird watching. He was a faithful member of Robinhood Road Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, NC. He enjoyed any and all activities with his wife, children and grand/great-grandchildren. Matt and Kathy enjoyed many close friendships throughout their years together. He was always willing to help others when they needed it and did so with a smile and positive attitude. He will be greatly missed by his family and all that knew him.

Inurnment will be held 3:00 PM Friday, October 30, 2020 at Parklawn Memorial Park. with military honors.. A Celebration of Matt's life will be held 10:00 AM Saturday, October 31, 2020 at Robinhood Road Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Robinhood Road Baptist Church Building Fund, 5422 Robinhood Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106.
