Kathryn Stout

Mrs. Kathryn Ward Stout, 96, of Winston-Salem, peacefully passed away at her home on Thursday, July 2, 2020. She was born in Hot Springs, VA on July 5, 1923, to the late Samuel and Etta Ward. Mrs. Stout spent most of her life in the Washington, DC area. In her younger years, she held many jobs from cigarette girl to photographer, and even during WWII, she was a “Rosie Riveter.” Most importantly, she was wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and homemaker, all of which she valued deeply. In Maryland, she was an avid golfer. She was a member of the Glendale Golf Course, the Ladies’ Auxillary for the Riverdale Fire Department, Moose Lodge, and the Lanham United Methodist Church. She could fly an airplane, but never learned to ride a bike. Mrs. Stout was creative, artistic, and accepted everyone as they were and could find the good in everyone. She often said, “you should always wear lipstick, it brightens your face, makes you feel good, and gives you confidence.”

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Stout is preceded in death by her husband, Fredrick Stout; granddaughter, Nicholle Surratt; a brother; and two sisters. Surviving are four daughters: Susan Stout Phend of Winston-Salem, Patricia Kathryn Fife of Cape Coral, FL, Victoria Stout Moran (Richard) of Boonville, and Nancy Ruth Stout of Lewes, DE; seven grandchildren: Philip Surratt (Shannon), David Fife (Randi), Steve Fife (Whitney), Richard Moran, Jr. (Rhonda), Paul Moran (Whitney), Robert Bagley, and Scarlett Stout; thirteen great-grandchildren; a brother, Tommy Ward of California; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside service for family and close friends will be conducted at Whynot Cemetery in Seagrove, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Ronald McDonald House, 419 South Hawthorne Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103, or to Trellis Supportive Care, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
