Marie Nifong

Marie Brewer Nifong passed away on May 20, 2019.  She was born on June 21, 1928 to Sarah Foltz and James A. Brewer Sr. in Forsyth County. Marie spent her childhood on a dairy farm in Forsyth county and worshiped at Advent Moravian Church. She graduated from Griffith High School and Graham-Thomas Technical College in Richmond, Va. with a degree in Medical & Allergy Technology. She worked with Dr. B.B. Pool at City Memorial Hospital, Winston-Salem. Marie met the love of her life while sitting on the front porch of the Brewer farmhouse with her friend Doris when Paul and Herman Foltz came riding by in a Buick waving and yelling at the girls; the rest was history. She married 1st Lt. Paul D Nifong on June 28, 1952, for 64 years until Paul’s passing in 2016. Marie was a member of Clemmons Moravian Church where she taught Sunday School class for 35 years, directed children’s choir and sang in the adult choir. She was interested in art as a young girl inspired by four aunts who were artists. She took watercolor workshops twice a year from nationally accredited teachers for 14 years from the Sawtooth Center. Being of the Moravian denomination, she painted symbols of God's love for us through the Love Feast and Moravian Seal. Marie was a naturalist with a love for growing flowers and painting them. She wanted to glorify God in everything she painted, showing the beauty He has given us on this earth. She was an exhibiting member of the Associated Artists of Winston-Salem.  Her paintings are represented in private collections throughout NC. and the world and she has won many awards in juried exhibitions. She also loved to support Samaritan Ministries, Crisis Control and Sunnyside Ministry and spent many hours in court being an advocate for the mentally ill. She worked with her husband setting up a Dental Clinic in Ahuas, Honduras, where natives would walk from miles around to seek relief from dental pain. Marie cared for the sick, the hurt, the poor, the troubled and the needy, taking food, holding a hand, saying a prayer or taking a vase of flowers from her beautiful rose garden. She always cared deeply for others, she was gracious, kind, and loving. Marie & Paul were blessed with three children, Dr. Paul D Nifong Jr. & wife Melissa, Gary B. Nifong & wife Margaret, and Lisa A. Nifong. There are 5 grandchildren, Alex Nifong, Patrick Nifong & wife Ana Linn, Molly Nifong, Nathan Nifong & wife Miki, Ashley Hirschfield & husband Austin, and two great grandchildren Paul Oscar and Nanoka Margaret. She has a surviving brother James A. Brewer Jr. and a sister Ila Louise Brewer who proceeded her in death. A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, May 24, 2019 at Clemmons Moravian Church with Rev. Christopher C. Thore officiating.  Burial will follow in the church graveyard.  The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Thursday, May 23, 2019 at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel.  Memorials may be made to Sunnyside Ministry in Winston-Salem.
