Martha "Dixie" Thomas

Mrs. Martha L. “Dixie” Thomas, our beloved “Granny” passed away peacefully surrounded by her family, Friday, January 20, 2023, at the age of 90.  She was born November 18, 1932, in Robeson County to the late William Bernice Lewis and Sada Atkinson.

Dixie grew up on a tobacco farm in Orrum, NC.  Later, she met the love of her life, John Hooker “Jack” Thomas, Sr.  They moved to Florida and then to Winston-Salem, where she lived for the last 54 years.

In addition to her parents and husband, Dixie is preceded in death by her step mother, Ruth Floyd and two sisters, Eloise Garrett and Elsie Pervatte.  She is survived by her son, John Hooker Thomas, Jr. (Susan); daughter, Gail Hopewell (Guy); five grandchildren: Joshua Thomas (Kelly), Meghan Layton (Scott), Zachary Thomas (Nicki), Chelsie Beasley, and Sarah Hopewell; and nine great-grandchildren: Bentley, Mackenzie, Alexis, Hannah Grace, Thomas, Matthew, Harper, Zoey, and Evie.

A graveside service will be conducted 1:00 PM Thursday, January 26th at Parklawn Memorial Park with Rev. Craig Schaub officiating.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Wilson Medical Center, 2130 Forest Hills Road W Suite A, Wilson, NC 27893.
