Nancy Martin

Ms. Nancy Templeton Martin, 96, went to be with her Lord on Monday, November 21, 2022, at Piney Grove Nursing and Rehabilitation in Kernersville. Nancy was born in Forsyth County on February 16, 1926, to the late John Dockery and Sallie Icenhour Templeton.  Her first job was at Dize Awning where she contributed to the WWII effort by sewing pup tents.  She also worked for Hanes Hosiery and was a fulltime homemaker for several years.  She graduated from nursing school and became an OR scrub nurse at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, and then worked for several years in that capacity for Medical Park Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC. After retirement she returned to work as an LPN at Walnut Cove Health and Rehabilitation Center, where she worked into her 70s.  At that time, she became an avid volunteer at the East Stokes Outreach of Walnut Cove and was very active in the Walnut Cove Senior Center activities.  She was spontaneous and loved to travel. In her 60s she called her sister and said, “Dorothy, I would love a big glass of Florida orange juice.” So, the two of them jumped in the car and drove to Florida.  Among Nancy’s favorite destinations were Nova Scotia, Ireland, Alaska, Canada, Germany, Jekyll Island, Italy, Hershey, and Disney World.  She was an avid gardener well into her 80s. She lived in many homes over the course of her life and made every one of them beautiful with her green thumb. She also collected special rocks from her travels to use for landscaping, and for her rock collection.  She could always tell you where and when she got every single rock.  Nancy was a prolific knitter and crocheter.  Her love of crochet was passed down from her mother. She picked up knitting in her 30s when a neighbor taught her the basics. She learned quickly and became a master of her craft.  Nancy made countless blankets, sweaters, vests, and scarves for her family.  Nancy was the oldest member of Chestnut Grove United Methodist Church in King.  She crocheted over 150 prayer shawls for their Prayer Shawl Ministry, and said she prayed over every stitch for recipients who were facing hard times.  She poured her heart and soul into them and wasn’t satisfied until each one was just right.  She crocheted her last prayer shawl just weeks before she passed.  She will always be remembered for her many wonderful qualities: an unwaveringly sharp mind, a strong work ethic, resourcefulness, an independent spirit, a wry sense of humor, a heartwarming smile, loving devotion to her family, and a steadfast faith.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Carl L. Martin, Jr. and an infant son, Ronald Martin; four sisters, Grace Vandewalker, Yetive Bolen, Dorothy Sparks, and Lutelle Matthews and four brothers, John, Ralph, Carl, and James Templeton.  Surviving to cherish her memory are two sons, Carl Martin, III “Butch” (wife) Rose Mary of Walnut Cove and Keith Martin (wife) Ginger of Braselton, GA; five grandchildren, Carl Martin, IV “Skip”, Michelle Martin, Brian Martin, Amy Furches, and Jamie Link (Joey); two step-grandchildren, Darren Oakley (Emily) and Adrianne Twyman; 7 great-grandchildren, Zoe, Sage, Colby, Cooper, Nora, Jude, and Wyatt and 3 step-great-grandchildren Amber, Christopher, and Kaylee; also surviving are several nieces and nephews.  A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, November 28, 2022, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Dr. Evelyn Lemons officiating.  Burial will follow at Parklawn Memorial Gardens.  The family will receive friends from 12:00-1:30 PM prior to the service.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the East Stokes Outreach Ministry, 301 W. Third St. Walnut Cove, NC 27052.
