Stokely Ann Stanley Scott

Stokely Ann Stanley Scott, of Winston-Salem, NC, went peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in the early afternoon of Wednesday, June 4, 2025, in what one can only imagine was a wonderful reunion with her husband, Jim, and her daughter, Susan.

Ann was a native of McColl, South Carolina, born on August 17, 1933, daughter of the late Edward Stokely “Stokes” Stanley and Lula Mae “Lucy” Whitehead Stanley. While being born in McColl, Ann also lived in Emporia, Virginia as a young girl before moving with her parents to Winston-Salem, where she lived the rest of her life.

Ann was the spouse of the late James Kay Scott, a native of Forsyth County, NC, to whom she was married for 52 years.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Susan Liles; and her brother, Tommy Stanley.

Ann is survived by her sons, Stan and wife, Susan of Winston-Salem and Stephen and wife, Elizabeth of Cary; her son-in-law, Kemp Liles of Greensboro; her grandchildren, Paxton Scott and wife, Siri of Raleigh, Colby Scott and wife Kristen of Pfafftown, Gregory Liles of Greensboro, Micaelah Petersen and husband, Ben of Cary and Riley Scott of Cary; and her great-grandchildren, Beckham Liles of Greensboro and Stokeley Scott of Raleigh.

Upon graduating from R.J. Reynolds High School, Ann worked for Wachovia Bank and Trust Company before leaving the bank to become a stay-at-home mom and homemaker, a role of which she was most proud and cherished. Ann was a member of Salem Baptist Church where she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at a young age. Through the years Ann served in and was an active member of the local Christian Women’s Club. However for Ann, Salem Baptist and her Salem family of friends were a central part of her life in the worship of her Lord and where she served her church at various periods of time as a teacher, a member of the Wednesday night “Supper Crew,” in the church benevolence ministry, in the church nursery with the “bed babies” and where she supported several mission minded ministries.

Throughout Ann’s life she enjoyed the study of the Word of God which served her well in how she led her life as a witness for her Lord and as a source of wisdom in her advice and counsel that she would give to others, particularly to each of her children, their spouses when they came into the family circle and to her grandchildren to whom she became and will forever be known as “Scotty” - a name by which she would be known by all who met her in her later years of life. Scotty, typically with an ever-present cup of coffee in hand, loved to engage in conversations with her family and with people across all walks of life – it would be safe to say that she never met a stranger and quickly became friend to all that she met.

A service celebrating Ann’s life will be led by Dr. Howard Wilburn at 2:00 pm on Friday, June 27, 2025, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 at the funeral home prior to the service.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Tressia Allred, and her devoted Live Long Well Care staff, Rebecca Trivette, Shakia Doctor, Lynetta Evans, Mary Horne, and Fred Sweet, among others, and to the staff of Homestead Hills. Additionally, the family will be forever grateful to the family and friends who loved Ann.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution can be made in Ann’s name to Cru (https://give.cru.org/), the Winston-Salem Rescue Mission (https://wsrescue.org/) and Salem Baptist Church (https://www.salemws.org/).
