Dr. Thomas Lawrence Brown, 76, devoted husband, father, grandfather, physician, educator, and friend, passed away on March 14, 2024, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. In the end, he had touched the lives of so many people, lifted the community around him, and left this world a better place.
Tom was born on October 6, 1947, to Philip E. and Edith (Chavis) Brown in Bellmawr, NJ.
He was a state-ranked athlete in high school and was awarded a track and field scholarship to University of Missouri. This path was interrupted by his being drafted into the US Army where he honorably served as an artillery officer. Tom graduated cum laude from Catawba College and received his medical degree from Bowman Gray School of Medicine. After his OB/Gyn residency in Greenville, SC, Tom came to Winston-Salem to practice. He has delivered over ten thousand babies in his long career.
Tom will be remembered for his dedication to his patients and his profound impact on medical students and residents. He received the “Teacher of the Year” award numerous times, and his legacy lives on in the physicians he has trained.
He was honored with admission to the Mt Tabor High School Hall of Fame for his long service to the school.
Surviving are his wife, Deborah Holden; children, Jennifer Brown Coulombe, and Tommy Brown (Christine); stepchildren, Matthew Moran and Sarah Moran (Dave Mackay); grandchildren, Mason, Dylan, and Logan; brother, Phil (Linda) Brown; sister, Sue Shea; the mother of his children, Suzy Eldreth (Tony); a large extended family, and innumerable friends and colleagues. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Joey and Richie. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, March 20th, at Wait Chapel with Chaplain Randy Hillman officiating. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Trellis Supportive Care or Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center Foundation. Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com.
