Obituary for Bro. Bobby Roberson

WINSTON SALEM - Robert “Bobby” Eugene Roberson, 86, went home to be with his Lord on Monday, February 12, 2018. He was born in Forsyth County on August 5, 1931 to Rev. Ezra and Era Roberson who preceded him in death. He was married to Jacquelyn White Roberson for 66 years until her death in 2015. Also preceding him in death was his brother, C.E. Roberson of Walkertown.
Bobby was the beloved “Daddy” of four children, Steve Roberson (Linda), Sue Whiteheart (Jerry), Stan Roberson (Joanne), and Molly Potts (Mark); he was “PawPaw” to ten grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren; and “Bro. Bobby” to the members of Gospel Light Baptist Church for over 61 years. He is also survived by his brother, Ed Roberson of Kernersville; sister-in-law, Edith Roberson of Walkertown; and brother-in-law, Larry White (Sue).
Bro. Bobby was born and raised in the Kernersville area and grew up as the son of a greatly-used preacher of the gospel. He was saved at the age of 17 and called to preach two years later. Bro. Bobby pastored Dennis Baptist Church in Walnut Cove for one year. He then pastored Gospel Light Baptist Church in Walkertown, where he faithfully ministered for over 61 years.
Bro. Bobby’s life verse was Philippians 4:13 – “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” During the past 61 years of his ministry at Gospel Light, thirteen building programs have been completed and paid for. The Church has a Spanish ministry that has its own property nine miles from the main Church.
His love and compassion for people drove him to begin a Bus Ministry over 50 years ago that has resulted in thousands of children and adults coming to know Christ as their Saviour. Gospel Light Christian School was started 43 years ago to teach Christian principles and values in the education of young people. Bro. Bobby also led the Church in purchasing a 139-acre camp in Hillsville, Virginia, which has been instrumental in hundreds of juniors and teens being saved or called to the ministry.
From plowing with a mule in the backfields of Kernersville to preaching behind hundreds of pulpits, Bobby Roberson never forgot his humble beginnings. Even after receiving five honorary degrees and having Crown College name their School of Pastoral Ministry after him, he remained “Bro. Bobby” to all who knew him. He loved the saying “Honorary degrees are like a curl on a pig’s tail, it does not provide any more ham!”
Bobby Roberson was an old-fashioned, independent, fundamental Baptist preacher. He preached faithfully out of the King James Version of the Bible, firmly believing it was the inspired Word of God. He never wavered from his conviction that Christians should be a witness for Christ everywhere.
He leaves a legacy hard to surpass and one he never strived to attain. Bro. Bobby’s greatest desire was to leave behind a good name and be a faithful servant to his Lord.
His family, his congregation, and his many friends can truly say he did leave a good name and he was faithful to the Lord. It could be said of him, like the Apostle Paul in II Timothy 4:7, “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”
A funeral service to celebrate Bro. Bobby’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 16, 2018 at Gospel Light Baptist Church. Entombment will follow the service in the church cemetery. Bro. Bobby will lie in state from 11:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. Thursday, February 15, at the church, with the family receiving friends starting at 3:00 p.m.
Many thanks to the members of Gospel Light Baptist Church for their kindness to our family through the years and during these past few months. Your cards and gifts have been a blessing and encouragement to our beloved “Daddy” and the family.
Also, a special ‘Thank You’ to Joanna Smith and Cheryl Jones for their special care. The family is very grateful to the staff of Oak Forest Health and Rehabilitation for their kindness to our father and family. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Gospel Light Baptist Church, GLBC Bus Ministry or Gospel Light Christian School, at P.O. Box 38, Walkertown, NC 27051. Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel is serving the Roberson family.
